Crankin', The Series!

What do you get when you cross Crankin' In the New Year with Friday Night Flashes? You guessed it...Crankin', The Series! Although Crankin' In the New Year has been an annual event here at the gym for almost fifteen years, this year we decided to try something that would be more directed toward our local community, and potentially even more fun. The series will consist of four comps, one per month starting Dec. 5th. You can compete as an individual or form a team and design your own t-shirt. For details and dates, check out "Events and Specials at Rocknasium" on Rocknasium.com And if you're interested in being on a team but don't know people to climb with, just ask a staff member and we'll help hook you up with someone.

Getting more out of the bouldering circuits...

The latest bouldering circuits have been up a little over a month now. Probably like most of you, I fired through them, noting which ones were "easy" and which were "too hard", which ones I really liked, and which ones fit into the category..."what was the setter thinking???" Now, I warm up on the easier ones that I really like but am starting to feel like it's time for new circuit problems. (And it almost is!) But stopping there is really not getting the full benefit out of circuit problems. For example, I've done all of the white circuit problems except for one that seems way more difficult than the others. I worked on it a couple of sessions but then dismissed it as too hard. But is it really? Last week, I got inspired and set the goal of finishing all of the white problems. I tackled it with renewed enthusiasm, and...made progress! Now, I'm really stoked. It feels like it's within reach and if I finish it, it will probably be one of the harder problems I've done, which is part of the goal of circuit problems...pushing yourself to climb harder. So, if you've completed all the problems in a circuit except for one or two, you've got a few more weeks to really push yourself and get the most out of those circuits. It might even be fun!

Tis the season...

Well, it's that time of year again. You know, bouldering season! I've seen you all getting strong working the circuit routes to their max so now it's time to get outside and reap the gains. Julie and I headed to Vacaville this last weekend and found great temps and only slightly dirty basalt (bring your brushes for the topout)...all just 15 minutes away. The Putah Creek boulders aren't much farther and if you have a whole day, check out "Bay Area Bouldering" for more destinations. And if you're fortunate enough to have a free weekend, Yosemite Valley has become a bouldering hotspot the past few years. Pick up a copy of "Yosemite Valley Bouldering" and see how many awesome problems you can tick off before the rainy season hits in earnest. And then of course, there's the east side...the Buttermilks, the Happy Boulders, the Sads. And the season there is just getting started!

Definitely, tis the season to be jolly...and strong!

The newest "feature" at the gym...Farris Holliday!

I'd like to introduce Farris, our newest employee and winner of the recent Halloween costume contest! As you can see Farris is creative, in addition to being awesome with kids and just a great guy to have around. Not only is Farris an avid boulderer, but he's also in his first year of college with a major in Theology and Religious Studies. So, next time you're in the gym, check out our new feature!
